ByDeborah Austin North American freight transportation and logistics provider Pacer International has completed acquisition of RFI Group Inc., a freight forwarding and customs brokerage firm that also has ocean-transportation brokerage capabilities. The acquisition will -- for the first time -- expand Pacer's menu of freight distribution services to include international-trade-related services. The $113 million RFI, headquartered in New York, uses a proprietary PC-based forwarding system integrated with the systems of U.S. Customs. The $1.4 billion Pacer International, based in Walnut Creek, Calif., offers a range of intermodal, trucking, warehousing, consolidation, and other logistics services on a retail basis through Pacer Logistics. It also operates Pacer Stacktrain, a double-stack rail system for distribution of containerized freight, marketed on a wholesale basis.
