Compiled ByTraci Purdum When asked the question, "How would you rate the leadership abilities of most executives today?" 36% of survey respondents said fair, 3% said poor and only 12% said excellent, according to Accountemps, a Menlo Park, Calif., temporary staffing service that developed the survey. The survey, which was conducted by an independent research firm, queried 150 executives. "Effective management requires more than simply assigning tasks among the team," says Max Messmer, chairman of Accountemps. "Leaders have the responsibility to inspire others to achieve their full potential." To help executives execute effective leadership, Messmer offers these suggestions:
  • Develop a clearly defined vision and communicate it to your team.
  • Help individuals learn, grow and realize their professional ambitions.
  • Acknowledge that you don't always have the right answers. Seek and accept the advice of those who have more experience and expertise, regardless of their rank.
  • Keep your word. If you make a commitment, follow through on it.
