Siemens on April 1 announced a Norwegian order for 88 offshore wind turbines for more than 450 million euros. The deal, worth almost $600 million, was signed with StatoilHydro and Statkraft and would see Siemens deliver 315 megawatts (MW) of electricity generating capacity to a site known as Sheringham Shoal off the British coast.
That capacity "will provide clean energy to over 220,000 households" from 2011.
A five-year service contract that could be extended to 11 years was part of the deal, Siemens said.
It claimed the top ranking among manufacturers of offshore wind turbines, with more than 600 MW of installed capacity and and order backlog of 3,300 MW more.
One quarter of all Siemens sales now associated with renewable energy sources, with wind power the leading activity.
The German group, which makes everything from light bulbs to nuclear power stations, medical equipment and high-speed trains, plans to develop its solar energy operations as well.
