Taiwan's Hon Hai Group is set to invest at least 10 billion Taiwan dollars (US$300 million) to build a solar plant in the center of the island, a report said on Feb. 11.
Hon Hai's chairman Terry Gou made the announcement at a company year-end party in Miaoli county, the intended site of the solar cell and module plant, according to the Economic Daily News.
The group's flagship company Hon Hai Precision makes a wide range of products -- from cell phones to personal computers and consumer gadgets -- for many top brand names such as Apple, Dell, Nokia and Sony.
Taiwan estimates its solar energy industry will be worth up to 200 billion Taiwan dollars (US$ 6 billion) by 2020, according to government figures.
The parliament last year passed a major renewable energy bill aimed at adding between 6,500 and 10,000 megawatts of generating capacity from renewable sources over the next 20 years.
