Philips
Respironics -- New Kensington, PA
Philips Respironics' mission is to improve quality of life for at-risk
individuals in the home through better awareness, diagnosis, treatment,
monitoring, and management of their conditions. Philips Respironics
manufacturing plants provide exceptional quality and operational best practices
to our worldwide customers. The products at the Philips Respironics Sleep
Therapy (RIST) facility include our System One Sleep Therapy system, SleepEasy
1 & 2, and most non-invasive ventilation electromechanical products.
Occupying 172,000 square feet and situated on 33 acres, RIST has 100,000 square
feet of warehouse/production space and 65,000 square feet of office space. RIST
is home to approximately 250 associates.
The size of this facility isn't its only impressive characteristic. A circular
material presentation conveyer system allows for high-volume, low-parts
manufacturing. Assemblers are situated at the beginning of the lines, and parts
are delivered directly to the production floor via fork trucks. Such process
improvements significantly reduce overall production time. Also contributing to
a more effective flow is the computerized sortation process which occurs on the
mezzanine, as well as a new literature collator.
The Material Logistics groups also reside at RIST and benefits from increased
efficiencies. There are 20 dock doors, four times as many as the Murrysville
facility (RIMR). High-density flow racks were installed to create deeper
storage areas for a higher volume of product, and the Incoming Inspection area
is located outside the warehouse in a more controlled environment. The Reverse
Logistics team supports Return to Stock ("RTS") and the rework of selected
products.
What
You Will See on the Tour:
The tour will take you through the facility summarizing all processes from
receiving to shipping. We will highlight many process and efficiency gains
achieved when we moved the electromechanical and high volume ventilation
products to this new facility. In this virtually paperless factory, you will
see examples of Kanban, Visual Management, Demand Flow Technology (DFT), Quick
& Easy Kaizen (QEK), 5S and QCDSM. QCDSM is the catalyst for our continuous
improvement efforts and focuses on measuring and improving Quality, Cost,
Delivery, Safety and Morale. We will also emphasize
examples of Employee Engagement throughout the tour.
