La-Z-Boy
-- Dayton, TN
La-Z-Boy Tennessee manufactures one of America’s most recognized icons -- the
La-Z-Boy Recliner, which was invented in 1929 by its founders, Edward Knabusch
and Edwin Shoemaker. Since that time La-Z-Boy has evolved into a global company
which provides high-quality, comfortable and great-looking furniture throughout
North America and around the world. La-Z-Boy’s Dayton, Tennessee campus has
proudly been part of this storied tradition since 1973. The Dayton plant began
as a recliner manufacturing site. Our operations were expanded to include
reclining sofa products and, in 1991 stationary and sleeper sofas were added to
the product breadth. With just over 27 acres under roof, La-Z-Boy Tennessee is
the largest employer in a three-county area. In addition to our assembly plants
for manufacturing finished product, we also house divisional supply centers for
both hardwood parts and steel fabricated parts. The La-Z-Boy Tennessee facility
was a 2009 finalist for IndustryWeek's Best Plants Award.
What
You Will See on the Tour:
Upon arrival, participants will watch as we continuously and seamlessly flow
parts through departments and into the lean cellular assembly environment at
the Dayton facility. You will experience first-hand the transformation from
traditional (batch and queue) furniture manufacturing to contemporary lean
manufacturing as genuine "custom order" La-Z-Boy furniture is manufactured by
highly skilled "lean craftsmen." As you tour the plant you will immediately
notice plentiful visual factory management practices deployed. The plant boasts
a clean and organized work environment, with visual controls displaying
up-to-the-minute information. You will also observe the feedback and
communication stations and be able to discuss the in-depth concepts of Lean
Manufacturing, 5S, and advanced problem solving as they have been applied
within the La-Z-Boy Production System. You can view examples of Six Sigma and
Kaizen projects and successes integrated throughout the Dayton campus.
Immediately following the tour, a question-and-answer session will be offered
so attendees can learn even more about the La-Z-Boy Production System.
