Consumers spent less last month on cars, electronics and appliances, and building materials than they did in May, according to U.S. Commerce Department data released on July 14.
Seasonally adjusted, retail sales were $363.8 billion in June, a tenth of a percentage point less than May's total of $364.1 billion.
Retail sales are a closely watched economic indicator since consumer spending accounts for about two-thirds of total U.S. economic activity.
