IW 50 Best Manufacturing Company

Universal Forest Products Inc.
Grand Rapids, Michigan
http://www.ufpi.com
Founded in 1955 as a single sales office serving the manufactured housing industry, Universal Forest Products has become a leading supplier to four major markets: do-it-yourself retail home centers, site-built construction market, industrial markets and the manufactured housing industry. The company manufactures and engineers wood and wood-alternative products, components, specialty wood packaging and structural lumber products.

Universal Forest Products is one of the largest producers of pressure-treated wood and North America's largest manufacturer of engineered roof systems for manufactured housing and site-built construction. The company is a leading buyer of solid-sawn lumber and one of the largest customers of North America's largest mills.

In a July 11, 2005, press release announcing second-quarter earnings, William G. Currie, CEO, said, "We're pleased with the results in each of our markets, which, with the exception of D-I-Y/retail, saw double-digit unit sales increases. While D-I-Y/retail remains Universal's largest market, Currie noted that the company's strategy is to emphasize greater sales growth to the other three markets in order to create better balance and diversification in its customer base."
