Deluxe Corp. has three business segments that serve small businesses, banks and consumers. History

William Roy Hotchkiss started Deluxe Corp. as Deluxe Check Printers in St. Paul, Minn., in 1915 with a $300 loan and an idea to print bank checks. Hotchkiss began marketing to banks outside the Minneapolis-St. Paul region, and in 1916 company sales were $4,173. In 1924, the company added lithographic equipment to improve the quality of its checks. By 1940, the company had locations in Cleveland and New York, and sales had surpassed $1 million. Deluxe became a public company in 1965. Five years later, company sales surpassed $100 million. In the 1980s, the company entered the computer forms and business forms markets. By the end of the decade, sales surpassed $1.3 billion. The company became the first to offer Internet banking check-ordering applications in 1998. Three years later, the company was receiving more than 80% of its check orders through electronic transactions.

Officers

CEO Lawrence J. Mosner joined Deluxe in November 1995 as president of Deluxe Direct. Since then, he has served as president of the Deluxe Financial Services unit and executive vice president of Deluxe Corp. He became chairman and CEO in January 2001. President and COO Ronald Eilers joined Deluxe in 1988 when the company acquired Current Inc. He was named COO of Deluxe in May 2000 after serving as president of Deluxe subsidiary PaperDirect Inc., manager of Deluxe's business forms division, president of Deluxe Direct and senior vice president of Deluxe. Douglas Treff joined Deluxe as senior vice president and CFO in October 2000. Before joining the company he worked in several leadership roles, including CFO, at Wilsons The Leather Experts Inc.

In The News: Unique Checks For Worthy Causes

Instead of writing checks to benefit charitable causes, consumers now can order them. Deluxe Corp. has raised nearly $8 million for various organizations through its "cause-related" check program, which the company introduced in 1995. Through the program, consumers can order checks with a unique design that benefit various causes such as breast cancer treatment and support for victims of

Sept. 11. Deluxe donates a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each check package to the organization featured on the checks. The company announced the sale of its

PremiumWear Inc. apparel unit to Forsyth Holdings, a privately owned company headquartered in Toronto.
