Sanderson Farms' net sales topped the $1 billion mark at in 2004. The producer, processor and distributor of fresh and frozen chicken is among the top 5 broiler companies in the U.S. Under its own brand name, Sanderson Farms distributes frozen prepared entrees and other specialty food products throughout the southeastern, southwestern and western U.S.
Facing a growing market, Sanderson opened a new facility in Georgia as well as an expansion of its Collins, Miss., processing and hatchery facility. The Collins plant will see a capital infusion of $20 million for improvements. Commenting on the expansion, Joe F. Sanderson, Jr., CEO, said, "Our strategic market shift over the past several years to focus our production and processing on higher-margin products has served us well. We have timed this conversion at Collins to coordinate with the opening of the company's new Moultrie, Ga, processing facility. The Georgia facility will be dedicated exclusively to serving retail customers and our new state-of-the-art poultry complex is closer to our growing list of customers located in the southeast.
"We are excited about the opportunities ahead for Sanderson Farms in fiscal 2005. Our expansion into Georgia is underway as planned and we still expect initial operations to begin during the fourth fiscal quarter of 2005. Considering the current market environment and projected lower feed costs, positive consumer demand trends and the renewed growth in exports, we expect favorable market conditions to prevail in fiscal 2005."
