Originally a West Texas newspaper company, Harte-Hanks Inc. is a direct
marketing and targeted advertising firm. Harte-Hanks Direct Marketing tailors
material to each of the vertical markets it serves. Harte-Hanks Shoppers is
said to be the largest owner, operator and distributor of shopping publications
in North America.
The company posted 2005 revenues of $1.13 billion (up 10.1% from 2004),
operating income of $190 million (up 15% from 2004) and net income of $114.5
million (up 17.3% from 2004).
"Our focus over the last two years has been on the profitability of our direct
marketing revenue, and in 2005 our operating income margins improved 140 basis
points, our second consecutive year of improving operating income margins by
over 100 basis points year-over-year," said Harte-Hanks CEO Richard Hochhauser
on Jan. 31, 2006, the day the company announced fourth-quarter and full-year
2005 financials.
The company's Shoppers operation posted revenue growth of 13.2% and an
operating income increase of 9.8% in 2005, thanks in major measure to the
acquisition of the Tampa Flyer. Without the acquisition Shoppers' 2005
operating income margins would have been unchanged from 2004, Hochhauser said.
