Valassis, a Livonia, Mich.-based producer of newspaper inserts, is best known for its coupon packages that appear in newspapers across the United States. Offering a marketing alternative for consumer-packaged goods companies, among others, Valassis is well aware of financial fluctuations.
For 2005, the company posted $1.1 billion in revenues and 8.3% revenue growth.
"In 2005, we grew revenue in every product segment. Our diversified products and services and our broadened customer base enabled Valassis to deliver record revenues," said Alan F. Schultz, chairman, president and CEO. "I am especially proud of our accomplishments in our Neighborhood Targeted business segment where our revenues grew 23% during 2005. For 2006, we have repositioned the company to be leaner and more efficient."
In 2006, the company reported quarterly revenues of $247.6 million, down 11.3% from the first quarter of 2005. First-quarter net earnings were $18.1 million, down 36.1% from the comparable period last year.
"During the first quarter, we had some very exciting business developments that strengthened our foundation for the future," said Schultz. "Despite the difficult quarter for the promotional media industry, we met the low end of the published EPS guidance range. These advances made during the quarter will positively affect the rest of the year, particularly the second half."
