Identifying Major Steps and Key Points Within Job Instruction Training
Bonus Q&A from IndustryWeek's Highlights from Toyota Talent webcast, featuring David Meier

Question from Denis:
Please give an example of "major steps" and "key points."

Answer from David Meier:
Denis -- Let me use the driving example:

Major Step -- Place the car in Drive
Key Point -- 3 notches down

Another -- Starting with the task -- Merge into highway

Step 1. Accelerate
Key point -- to match speed of traffic

Step 2. Check Traffic
Key Point -- 1. Use side rear view mirror
2. Two seconds max looking in mirror
3. To see opening

Step 3. Modify speed

etc. Also there is the step of signaling, etc. This is just a quick example but I had to break this down and there may be more to it.

Keep in mind that the challenge sometimes is in how to explain what is being done and how it is done. But you will be teaching, which includes showing and telling.
