Industry funding is an increasingly important driver of U.S. academic discovery and industrial innovation. A new report from the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation rates the states based on funds that the universities receive from industry.
10. South Carolina
At Clemson University a number of advanced manufacturing and materials research is being done including electrically-assisted manufacturing processes, friction stir forming, processing and welding and 3rd generation advanced high strength steels.
University of Utah
Utah is world-famous for the robotics systems it has produced, including manipulators such as the Utah/MIT Dextrous Hand and the Sarcos Dextrous Arm, humanoid robots such as DB2, entertainment robots such as Disney figures and Jurassic Park the Ride dinosaurs, and virtual reality systems such as the Sarcos Treadport and Biport. Faculty expertise is especially strong in the design of novel robot systems, including rehabilitation robotics, surgical robots, micro robots, aerial vehicles, precision positioning, and bio-inspired locomoting mechanisms, acutators, and sensors.
Advanced Functional Fabrics of America, on MIT’s campus provides end-to-end prototyping from fiber design to system integration of new textile-based products. It includes startup incubation space for companies spun out from MIT and other partners who are innovating advanced fabrics and fibers for applications ranging from apparel and consumer electronics to automotive and medical devices.
7. New York
The Cornell NanoScale Science & Technology Facility research encompasses physical sciences, engineering, and life sciences, and has a strong inter-disciplinary emphasis.
University of Oklahoma
Oklahoma University recently celebrated the opening of its Radar Innovations Laboratory, a facility for radar research, development, and education. This 35,000-sqft facility includes microwave labs, advanced fabrication capability, and two anechoic chambers.
In 2016 Washington University's School of Medicine, known for biomedical research received grants and contracts totaling more than $548 million.
Ohio State Aereospace Research Center
Ohio State University has a number of business and industry collaborations which include the Center for Advanced Polymer and Composite Engineering, the Honda Partnership Program and the Ohio Bioproducts Innovation Center.
Kansas University is responsible for $240 million in research expenditures. And it's a regional leader in technology commercialization.
Georgia Tech consistently ranks among the top U.S. universities in the volume of research conducted, and in 2016, it conducted $791 million in research.
“We have now proven a geometry that yields lifetime performance that for the first time establish that organic circuits can be as stable as devices produced with conventional inorganic technologies,” said Bernard Kippelen, director of Georgia Tech’s Center for Organic Photonics and Electronics. "This could be the tipping point for organic thin-film transistors, addressing long-standing concerns about the stability of organic-based printable devices.”
1. North Carolina
Three Tier 1 research universities – Duke University, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill formed the “Research Triangle” which helps the attract more than $2.5 billion of federal R&D funding each year and create more than 400 start-ups.
