The Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA), one of Washington's biggest and most influential trade associations, has named a prominent former Democratic congressman, Dave McCurdy (Okla.), as its new president. But the choice isn't sitting well with Republican leaders in Congress. Preferring that a member of the GOP be named to the high-profile post, they've threatened to limit Congressional access to McCurdy, who often gave Republicans fits during his seven-term stint (from 1981-95) in the House. Since leaving Capitol Hill, McCurdy has been a consultant, counting many high-technology firms among his clients. During his House career, he was chairman of the Intelligence Committee and two subcommittees. He also was cofounder and chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council. He succeeds Peter F. McCloskey, who is retiring after 21 years as EIA chief.
