Represents 13% of its U.S. workforce

French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi-Aventis said on Oct. 8 that it would cut 1,700 jobs in the United States, or 13% of its U.S. workforce, by mid-December.

Sanofi-Aventis, in the middle of a hostile $18.5bbillion bid for biotech firm Genzyme, said it was rationalizing its pharmaceutical division as part of a wider group restructuring.

Sanofi-Aventis employs some 13,000 people in the United States, with 6,900 employed there by the pharmaceutical division.
