Rensselaer Formula Hybrid is a student-led team that promotes the advancement of engineering proficiency. Through participation in the annual SAE Formula Hybrid competition, students build skills in product-design, team collaboration, and project management.

The engineering school participates in the Technical Entrepreneurship program where teams of engineering, business and design students work together to design, make and market new products for sponsors including GM, B. Braun and NASA.

In the electrical engineering program students design their own devices as part of a team. Some topics students have studied include, bioelectrical engineering and bio-instrumentation, electromagnetics, photonics, biophotonics, nanophotonics, sensors, device miniaturization and instrumentation.
