New Bill in France on Manufacturing Site Closures

Feb. 11, 2013
There are reports of a law that will be introduced by the summer and would oblige any company planning closures to make efforts to find buyers capable of keeping the work sites open and maintain employment.

PIERREFITTE-SUR-SEINE -- French President Francois Hollande said on Monday that a bill aimed at maintaining activity and jobs at profitable plants threatened with closure will be put before parliament, although he did not provide details.

"There is a commitment that was made on profitable sites" which "will find its place in the parliamentary calendar," Hollande said.

Hollande referred to a promise in his election campaign, in remarks when he opened work on a new building for the national archives at Pierrefitte-sur-Seine on the outskirts of Paris.

Sources close to the French president said a law would be introduced by the summer and would oblige any company planning closures to make efforts to find buyers capable of keeping the work sites open and maintain employment.

French industry is struggling and some high-profile job cuts are underway, notably in the car sector, and industrial workers are calling for a ban on profitable companies cutting jobs.
