Three of the largest food and consumer-product trade associations have formed the North American Alliance (NAA), to identify and cut trade barriers among NAFTA nations.

George Fleischmann, president and CEO, Food and Consumer Products Manufacturers of Canada; C. Manly Molpus, president and CEO, Grocery Manufacturers of America; and Francisco Rojas, executive president of ConMexico, established the alliance during a two-day meeting in Washington, D.C., last week.

The trio also addressed issues such as food safety standards and labeling, environmental issues, and tax and investment barriers.

Also attending the meeting were Richard Goldstein, president and CEO of Unilever United States Inc., Enrique Martinez Aldrete, president of Bestfoods Mexico, and Tony Eames president and CEO of Coca-Cola Ltd. Canada. Dr. Luis de La Calle of the Mexican Embassy, Peter Harder, Secretary of Treasury Board, Canada, and Jon Hueneman, U.S. Trade Representative of North American Affairs attended as well.
