Compiled ByDeborah Austin Consumer foods firm General Mills has chosen Empriva Technologies' SMA/RT system to manage its packaging data online. The Web-based SMA/RT system (Specification Management Application/Real Time) will allow General Mills to connect graphic arts and packaging engineering with suppliers -- with real-time access to specification information -- says Randy Darcy, General Mills' senior vice president of supply chain. This should provide cost savings and greater control over the production process, he says. As part of the agreement, General Mills will provide feedback on the functionality of SMA/RT and access to key executives to help in future Empriva product development. Headquartered in Kansas City, Empriva develops Web-based tools to help interaction among packaging supply-chain members. The $7.5 billion General Mills is headquartered in Minneapolis.
