The current market for outsourcing environmental services is more than $8.2 billion and growing, according to a survey by The BTI Consulting Group, Boston. BTI surveyed more than 670 environmental managers. The study found that manufacturers in the automotive, high-tech, and chemical industries are outsourcing the most. Overall, 43% of respondents representing 52% of all spending are looking at outsourcing. BTI's analysis shows that waste management is the first service to be outsourced.

"Companies are finding that they can retain strategic control and improve implementation through an environmental outsourcing model," says Michael B. Rynowecer, president of BTI. "Companies that outsource have taken dramatic steps to lower their environmental costs and improve environmental performance."
