The world may have been mired in recession during the past few years, but technology advances did not stand still. Thus it makes sense for CIOs to get knowledgeable about new technologies that may help their companies as business conditions improve. That's a piece of advice offered by Gartner Inc., a Stamford, Conn.-based IT advisory firm. Technologies that deserve a hands-on look in 2004, according to Gartner, are:

  • Linux desktop with open source personal productivity applications;
  • blade servers;
  • systems and devices for handling voice traffic over Internet protocol networks;
  • instant messaging and related collaboration tools; and
  • tools for Web services.
"The growing maturity of new technologies and development methods is a good reason to end the 'wait and see' policy toward deploying new IT ideas," says Mark Raskino, Gartner research director.
