Software.net, an Internet-based software reseller, announced it will deliver $50 million worth of Microsoft software packages, upgrades, and updates via the Internet to the Defense Logistics Agency and Dept. of Defense Procurement Agency over the next five years. Delivering the DOD's purchase electronically will save the Federal government more than $30 million in packaging, shipping, and installation costs, according to Software.net., in addition to providing same-day delivery of updates.

A spokesperson for Zona Research Inc., an industry-watching consultancy, said the hefty purchase--one of the largest ever over the Internet--reflects the governments confidence in electronic commerce and may boost the IT community's confidence in buying and receiving intangible goods such as software over the Internet.
