Compiled ByTraci Purdum PepsiAmericas, the second largest anchor bottler of Pepsi-Cola products, will use Symbol Technologies Inc.'s mobile computing solution to enhance its customer service. Symbol is a global provider of mobile data transaction systems. The Symbol PDT 8000 Pocket PC, which was built to withstand extreme weather conditions and drops to concrete, features an integrated bar code scanner and bright color display. The solution will enable PepsiAmericas' sales staff to take orders on site and ensure delivery trucks are stocked efficiently. Orders are remotely uploaded to a central order and routing system at PepsiAmericas via cell-phone connectivity. The mobile computer also provides an automated tool to track inventory, record deliveries and wirelessly print invoices to a portable printer. Once the driver returns, route information can be uploaded to the host computer via a wireless LAN. According to Symbol, the benefits include improved productivity through automated inventory management and increased efficiencies by eliminating stocking errors and paperwork.
