ByDoug Bartholomew Where would software be without a new release? After all, if Microsoft can do with Windows every couple of years or so, why can't IBM/Dassault Systemes with their popular Catia computer-aided design program? The Paris launch of Catia Version 5 Release 7 unveiled a host of new functions. For instance, it includes advanced piping and tubing design applications that provide the tools for defining fluid delivery systems across the automotive, aerospace, and shipbuilding industries. These applications do more than just represent objects geometrically. They also come with built-in logic and intelligence that can deliver the complete system definition and can guide the designer through the design to ensure corporate standards are followed. Comments Kenneth Versprille, research director at D.H. Brown Associates Inc., a research firm, "In all industry segments, adopters of the Catia V5 technology will find substantial capabilities in the new applications suites to enhance their competitive drive into global markets."
