Manugistics Inc., known for its planning and scheduling systems for the consumer packaged goods industry, will acquire ProMIRA Software Inc., a maker of planning software for manufacturers of complex products. The deal is expected to improve Manugistics capabilities in manufacturing planning, especially for discrete manufacturers in specific industries such as industrial equipment, automotive, and electronics.

ProMIRA, based in Ottawa, Canada, develops software to optimize material and capacity planning, and support real-time order promising. The material planning specialty of ProMIRA is expected to be a strong complement to Manugistics demand planning and supply chain analysis software.

"We have just taken a giant step in accelerating the delivery of our vision to provide the most comprehensive synchronized supply chain management solutions across a broad spectrum of industries," says William Gibson, president and CEO of Manugistics in Rockville, Md. "By adding new functionality for optimized material planning and supplier collaboration, this acquisition will complement our existing solutions and bolster our offering in vertical industries with discrete manufacturing and complex products."

According to Advanced Manufacturing Research, the addition of ProMIRA will make Manugistics more competitive with others in the advanced planning systems market, including i2 Technologies, Thru-Put Systems, and SynQuest.
