NAM Elects Luke And Engler

ByJohn S. McClenahen John A. Luke Jr. on Oct. 1 started a one-year term as chairman of the Washington, D.C.-based National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and John M. Engler became the business group's president and CEO. Luke says that his central message will be that "manufacturing matters" and is vital to America's future. Between now and the Nov. 2 presidential and congressional elections he'll be devoting a lot of time to NAM's "Project Prosperity," which the association describes as "an unprecedented non-partisan grassroots campaign to register, educate and motivate current and retired employees to vote." Engler, the former three-term Michigan governor who succeeds Jerry J. Jasinowski as NAM's chief executive, says, "We have an enormous job to do educating the public -- and our leaders -- about the importance of manufacturing to this country. We simply must reduce the cost of doing business in the U.S." Jasinowski remains associated with NAM as director of its Manufacturing Institute, which promotes manufacturing among policymakers, students, educators and the media.
