Toyota Shows Faith in Thailand

Jan. 27, 2014
Last week the company bought land near its existing plant in Chachoengsoa, for future production increase.

Despite political turmoil, Toyota is continuing to invest in Thailand.

Last week the Bangkok Post reported that Kyoichi Tanada, president of Toyota Motor Thailand, said that the company bought land near its existing plant in Chachoengsoa. The company did not give a specific timetable for the expansion.

Toyota, which has four plants in this location, is currently producing 300,000 cars annually.

The company is planning on producing an additional 100,000-200,000 per year at that location.

Overall production Thailand is at Toyota's maximum annual capacity of 850,000 vehicles. And the company wants to expand that number to 1 million over the next 3-4 years.

Tanada is however concerned about the political situation. "If Thailand's political unrest is prolonged, hitting overall economic growth accordingly, industry sales may miss their target," he said as reported in the Bankok Post.
