Company says new mid-sized sedans sales are encouraging

Even as its U.S. sales fell 32%, Ford said it had once again managed to increase its share of the shrinking market.

"We continue to operate in a very challenging economic and competitive environment," said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president for sales and marketing. Czubay said sales of several models "exceeded our plan," adding that Ford was "very encouraged by the consumer response to our new mid-size sedans."

Total Ford sales fell to 134,401 in April and were down 40% for the year to date at 458,772.
