Toyota Recalls Over 82,000 Cars in Japan

Defective window switch panel poses a fire risk

On Oct. 21 Toyota Motor Corp. recalled more than 82,000 units of its Vitz compact car in Japan, saying a defective window switch panel poses a fire risk.

The company said it had found that the window switch panel of the driver's seat may gradually accumulate excessive grease after repeated use, posing a fire risk. The defective switch caused at least one fire in western Shimane prefecture in November last year, the company said. The fire scorched the inside part of the door, but no casualties were reported, a company spokeswoman said.

The recall affects some 82,226 units of the car made from January to August 2005 and covering four models -- the DBA-KSP90, DBA-SCP90, DBA-NCP91 and CBA-NCP95.

The hatchback passenger car is marketed globally, but the recall only affects units in Japan.
