Toyota U.S. Sales Fall 34.4% in January

56.5% of Toyota's cars sold in the U.S. market were assembled in the U.S.

Toyota said on Feb. 3 its U.S. sales slid 34.4% on a daily selling basis compared with a year ago as the world's biggest economy felt the impact of a massive economic slump.

Toyota said it sold 117,287 vehicles in the month, including its Toyota, Scion and Lexus nameplates. Toyota also managed a small increase from the 114,084 vehicles sold in December.

For its Toyota division, car sales fell 21.6% and truck sales including sport utility vehicles slumped 37.7% compared with January 2007 levels.

Even the popular Prius hybrid car saw a 31.4% year-over-year drop in sales.

Lexus passenger car sales fell 37.7% and truck sales were down 21.2% from the year-ago month.

A total of 56.5% of Toyota's cars sold in the US market were assembled in the U.S., the company said.
