MeadWestVaco Named to Dow Jones Sustainability World Index

Listing is based on success in integrating environmental sustainability and social values into economic performance

In recognition of its economic, environmental and social performance, MeadWestvaco Corp. (MWV) announced on Sept. 9 it has been selected as a member of the 2008/09 Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World). This marks the fifth year that the global packaging company is included on the Index. The inclusion is based on the company's success in integrating environmental sustainability and social values into core business objectives and economic performance.

MWV also ranked best-in-class in the Containers & Packaging industry group for the fourth straight year, for leadership in criteria such as risk and crisis management, sustainable fiber and pulp and corporate citizenship and philanthropy.

"MWV's ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility continues to influence the innovative products and processes that make our business and our communities more sustainable," said John A. Luke, Jr., CEO of MWV.

Launched in 1999, the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes are the first global indexes tracking the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. The DJSI World comprises the leading companies in terms of sustainability around the world. It captures the top 10% based on long-term economic, environmental and social criteria out of the biggest 2,500 companies worldwide.
