First time EPA names an Energy Star Plant Award winner.

Three Toyota assembly plants won an Energy Star Plant award for their commitment and leadership in protecting the environment through energy efficiency.

The plants are:
  • Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana, Inc. (TMMI)
  • Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK)
  • New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI)

Some of the activities that qualified the plants for this award include installing energy efficient fluorescent lamps in all areas of the three plants, minimizing operational time of the paint shops by 10% and eliminating certain sections of the paint operations to reduce energy use by 5%.

"Environmental performance remains a top business priority as we grow our operations in North America," says Bruce Bremer, manager of facility engineering at Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc.
