US Steel Chooses Pittsburgh as New Headquarters Location

Nov. 24, 2014
The building, which will be constructed with sustainable building practices for U.S. Green Building Council LEED version 3 certification, will be completed in 2017.

U.S. Steel, with an annual raw steelmaking capability of 24.4 million net tons, announced on November 24 that it will relocate its corporate headquarters but will stay in Pittsburgh.

The company's new location in Pittsburgh’s lower Hill District will enable the area's 800 employees to be located under one roof.  The building, which will be constructed with sustainable building practices for U.S. Green Building Council LEED version 3 certification, will be completed in 2017,

“As we continue on our Carnegie Way transformation journey and write the next chapter in the history of U.S. Steel, we are proud that our roots will remain firmly planted in Pittsburgh as we call the lower Hill our new home,” said U.S. Steel CEO Mario Longhi .“These headquarters are an important investment in our employees and our future, as we foster increased collaboration far beyond the walls of this new building.”

The building will use the company's products where possible as steel supports sustainable building practices by reducing the carbon footprint of building materials through its inherent recyclability. Steel is the most recycled material globally, exceeding other metals, paper and glass, combined, according to a company statement.

“The U.S. Steel headquarters will be the first construction done at this site where the Civic Arena once stood and will advance what is anticipated to be a world-class, mixed use development," said the Allegheny Conference on Community Development.

The building, which  will be operated by an affiliate of the Penguins, “demonstrates the continued strength of our manufacturing sector and the connectedness to the region’s quality of life amenities," the group added. "By coming together on this development project, these iconic organizations are continuing the transformation of Pittsburgh.”
