The number of manufacturing layoffs that the U.S. Labor Department classifies as "mass," which means they affect at least 50 people at a single establishment, increased to 360 in July from 347 in June, on a seasonally adjusted basis.

However, fewer manufacturing workers in July got layoff notices than did in June. Again on a seasonally adjusted basis, 48,967 workers were affected in July, the lowest number for any month so far this year except for April, when 345 "mass" layoffs affected 43,186 workers.
