Starts for privately owned housing in the U.S. last month were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 2.123 million units, 5.3% higher than the revised October rate of 2.017 million units, the U.S. Commerce Department and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development jointly reported on Dec. 20.

Starts for single-family homes were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.808 million in November, 4.8% higher than the October rate of 1.725 million. Starts for units in multi-family buildings were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 277,000, some 6.1% higher than the October rate of 261,000.
