Skoda Auto Looks To Create Cheap Car For Asian Market

India, China and Russia are the target markets.

Skoda Auto, the biggest car maker in the Czech Republic, wants to develop a low-cost car for the Asian market, company president Delef Wittig said in an interview with the business newspaper Hospodarske Noviny on Feb. 19. "The really interesting future markets are found in India, China and Russia," Wittig explained. "For those markets we need an inexpensive car, for price is the main factor there," he added.

The head of Skoda Auto, part of the Volkswagen Group, gave no clear indication of when the new car might be launched.

Skoda Auto currently produces four models, ranging from the top of the market Superb to the small family car, the Fabia with the Octavia and Roomster aimed at the middle market.

The Czech producer is preparing the launch of the three-door sporty, Skoda Joyster, aimed at the youth market, and the small sport utility vehicle, the Skoda Jeti.
