Anyone who has bought gasoline in recent days knows about dramatically rising prices. But what effect are they having on the larger U.S. economy?

The answers will come on August 16 and August 17, when the U.S. Labor Department is slated to report, respectively, its consumer and producer price indexes for July. Economists generally are looking for higher rates of increase than in June but not for anything alarming.
