The number of Americans asking for unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week, ending a four-week decline, government data showed on Sept. 23.
Claims for the week to September 18 rose to 465,000, the Labor Department said.
The latest figure was worse than most economists' expectations of 450,000 new claims, sparking pessimism about the recovery.
