Sales of single-family houses were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.269 million in December 2005, nearly 3% higher than November's revised rate of 1.233 million, according to data released jointly Jan. 27 by the U.S. Commerce Department and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The median sales price for homes sold last month was $221,800; the average price was $272,900.

For all of last year, 1.282 million new homes were sold, 6.6% higher than 2004's mark of 1.203 million.
