Toyota Motor said on Oct. 21 that it would begin producing its popular Prius hybrid in Thailand next month as it eyes strong growth in developing markets.

The Southeast Asian nation will be its third manufacturing base for the fuel-sipping vehicle, after Japan and China. It will be produced at the group's plant in Chachoengsao Province on the outskirts of Bangkok.

Toyota has sold more than two million petrol-electric Prius vehicles worldwide since the launch of the first version in 1997.

Its popularity has continued despite a recall last year of 437,000 Prius and other hybrid vehicles to repair a flaw in the braking system, as part of around 10 million recalls worldwide.
