Company introduces "Connected Backup for Server"; extends company's storage as a service solutions

Boston-based Iron Mountain Inc. recently announced the availability of its Connected Backup for Server solution. The offering further extends Iron Mountain Digital's data protection and recovery solutions with enterprise file and print server protection, complementing Iron Mountain's Connected Backup for PC and LiveVault server backup solutions.

According to Iron Mountain, its Connected technology, which now supports Windows Server Operating Systems for server backup and recovery, provides customers with unmatched storage savings and reduces backup time. Additionally, the Company claims that its data reduction and de-duplication technologies can reduce storage capacity requirements by more than 80% of data volume.

As an extension of the Connected Backup for PC solution, Connected Backup for Server will now allow customers to manage their PCs and Windows Servers from one console.

The Connected Backup for Server solution provides scheduled and automated backups, automatically protects Microsoft Windows 2003 or Microsoft Windows 2000-based file and print servers, seamless integration with Connected Backup for PC implementations, which should save administration time and optimize network and storage resources.

The solution includes:

  • SendOnce -- SendOnce is designed to spare businesses the cost of repeatedly backing up multiple copies of identical files by creating a SendOnce pool of shared files. Since the technology works simultaneously against both server and PC data, only unique server files require space on data center servers.
  • Delta Block -- Delta Block software backs up only incremental changes to existing files, at the block level. This saves the space and bandwidth of repeatedly backing up large files.
  • Data Compression -- After SendOnce and Delta Block technologies have been applied, files are further compressed to minimize their storage footprint.
