The new RFID tag, introduced by Hitachi on Feb. 15 measures just 0.05 x 0.05 millimeters, according to a report on readersnewsnetwork.com. It beats Hitachi's mu-chip which is 0.4 x 0.4 millimeters, which had held the record for smallest tag. The new chip has a 128-bit ROM for storing a unique 38-digit number.
Hitachi used semiconductor miniaturization technology and electron beams to write data on the chip substrates to achieve the new, smaller size according to the report.
