Union Information and Technology and Communications Minister Dayanidhi Maran remarked that while India has made its mark in the IT and BPO space on a global scale, it was now the turn of the manufacturing sector to prove its strengths to the international audience.
As reported on Feb. 3 on WebIndia123.com, Maran, speaking during his inaugural address at the annual Madras Management Association, said that a substantial manufacturing base is essential to 'absorb the workforce for ensuring sustainable economic growth".
WebIndia123.com reports that the share of manufacturing in India's national income had shown only a marginal improvement from 15.8% in 1991 to 17% in 2003. "The figure should be somewhere in the range of 25%-35%. This requires the manufacturing sector to clock 12%-14% growth during the next decade, said Maran.
