UMC Sets up R&D Center in Singapore

TAIPEI -- Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) (IW 1000/881), a leading microchip maker, Wednesday said it has spent $110 million setting up a research and development unit in Singapore.

The unit will undertake R&D collaborations with local research institutes, such as Singapore's Institute of Microelectronics, the company said.

UMC is the world's third biggest contract microchip manufacturer by revenues after Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co and the U.S.-headquartered Globalfoundries Inc. It already operates a plant in Singapore employing 1,600 people.
