Seven Oil Workers Dead in Mexico Accident

Seven workers building an oil platform in Mexico died Wednesday when an elevator carrying them fell from a height of 100 feet.

VERACRUZ, Mexico -- Seven workers building an oil platform in Mexico died Wednesday when an elevator carrying them fell from a height of 30 meters (100 feet), an official said.

The accident happened in Veracruz state on the Gulf of Mexico. Five of the workers died on the spot and two died later in a hospital, said Ricardo Maza, a state civil protection official.

A third worker is in serious condition.

The accident happened on the grounds of a private company that builds offshore oil platforms for the state-owned company Pemex.
