Sept. 4, 2012
The San Jose, Chiapa facility will build 150,000 Audi Q5 SUVs annually.

Audi (IW 1000/69), the top-of-the-range carmaker owned by German auto giant Volkswagen AG (IW1000/10), said Tuesday it would build a new plant in central Mexico with production there set to begin in 2016.

The company will build the successor to its current Audi Q5 SUV model at the plant in San Jose Chiapa, central Mexico, with 150,000 vehicles planned for production annually, it said.

Work on building the plant is scheduled to begin next year.

"The production site in San Jose Chiapa meets various key requirements of our global growth strategy and we can step up our activities in American markets,"  said Rupert Stadler, chairman of the board of management.
