CFOs Cite Data Quality as Top Concern

Oct. 15, 2007
With shop-floor data driving top-floor decisions, information security is starting to take a back seat.

These days, many forward-thinking companies are placing an increased emphasis on the integration of data from -- and even the job roles and skill sets of -- engineering and IT. Couple this convergence with the ability of new software tools to drive cross-functional data directly into dashboards for mission-critical decision making, and a growing number of executives are taking a hard look at the quality of their data before going out on a business limb with it.

According to a recent survey from the Computer Sciences Corp. (CSC) and Financial Executives Research Foundation, improving data quality and information integrity is now the most critical technology concern cited by 58% of respondents.

Information security, which had held the top position for the past two years, slipped to No. 4, with nearly 46% rating it as critical (See "More IT Issues Facing CFOs").

According to CSC's BI practice leader Jerry Boltin, "CFOs directly feel the impact on operations and performance, and they are increasingly investing in initiatives that will address their concerns. About 70% of respondents have plans to improve their information integrity during the coming year."
