If you manufacture consumer products, then the best place to sell your merchandise online this holiday season is a multi-channel Web site. That's according to highlights from the holiday shopping section of Ernst & Young LLP's fourth-annual Global Internet Retailing study. The full study will be released in January, but the consulting firm released these highlights related to U.S. holiday shopping:

  • An average online shopper spent $896 over the Internet in the last 12 months.
  • One-fifth of online shoppers plan to do 50% of their holiday shopping online this year.
  • Consumers are more accepting of multi-channel players and are moving away from large e-brands such as Amazon.com. Traditional names such as JCPenney.com, WalMart.com, and BestBuy.com will take in an increasing share of online purchases into 2001.
  • Manufactured goods dominate a list of the most popular items purchased by those surveyed. That list is as follows, in order of popularity: books, CDs, computers, apparel, tickets, reservations, toys, electronics, and health/beauty items.
