The Environmental Protection Agency is looking for a few good -- and green -- chemical technologies for its 2004 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards. Green chemistry, explains the EPA, is the use of chemistry to prevent pollution. The awards recognize innovative chemical technologies that incorporate green chemistry in chemical design, manufacture and use -- and that have broad applications in industry. Any person or organization may nominate a green chemistry technology, and self-nominations also are accepted. Additionally, nominated technologies must have reached a "significant milestone" in the past five years in the United States. Nominations for the award must be postmarked by Dec. 31, 2003, to be eligible for the 2004 awards. Typically five awards are presented each year, reports the EPA.
